The C-StARR mission includes the development of education and training programs that enable the translation of research into policy and practice. We collaborate with partners at Duke and other organizations to provide training opportunities for Duke students, post-doctoral fellows, faculty, research scientists, community members, and C-StARR staff.

Researchers benefit from ongoing SSRI workshops that cover a wide variety of topics, including introductions to relevant software applications, research design, statistical methodologies, database management, and data analysis. Investigators also benefit from workshops offered in other Centers at Duke that include grant writing, intervention design, evaluation, and data analysis.

The C-StARR seminar series invite nationally and internationally renowned speakers—an average of three speakers per year—to speak on topics related to substance abuse, including, for example, research examining gene-environment interplay and developmental processes aimed at improving etiologic models of substance abuse and the prevention programs those models inform. Investigators and students also benefit from the Sulzberger lecture series at the CCFP and seminars sponsored by SSRI and other research centers and departments in the larger Duke community.

Staff in the Data Core and the Biological Methods Core provide training opportunities for investigators in the C-StARR and the postdoctoral fellows, research scientists, and graduate students who work with Center investigators. Early-career investigators, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students participate in an ongoing early career mentoring and writing group meeting series led by C-StARR faculty including William Copeland, Candice Odgers, and Rick Hoyle.
