Services and Resources

The four Cores of C-StARR—the Administrative Core, Pilot Core, Data Core, Biological Methods Core—work together to provide comprehensive administrative and technical support to all C-StARR research projects.

Administrative Core

Services

1. Nurture the Training and Career Development of Junior Investigators

The Core supports five postdoctoral fellows who work in multiple labs with superb mentors. The postdoctoral fellows are immersed in several research projects and collaborate on writing grant applications and publications with C-StARR investigators and affiliates.

2. Enhance and Support an Intellectual Community and Integrative Theory Development

The Core fosters multidisciplinary collaborations  by bringing together a diverse set of investigators with practitioners and supports multi-disciplinary working groups, seminar series, an annual day-long retreat, a monthly newsletter, research briefs, and a website.

3. Conduct Pilot Studies that Test Novel Hypotheses and Generate Larger Studies

The Center supports a substantial number of pilot studies that have the common theme of establishing linkages among multiple levels of regulatory processes in the prevention, initiation, and maintenance of substance abuse among adolescents. Some pilots led to the funding of full scale studies that support a number of post docs and graduate students.

4. Facilitate the Administration and Grants Management of Planned, Pending, and Funded Projects

Through the grant support services of the Social Sciences Research Institute (SSRI) at Duke, the C-StARR provides pre-award support to approved PIs and Co-PIs for proposals being developed, and post-award services for funded grants.

Data Core

Services

1. Provide Leadership in the Application of Rigorous and Innovative Statistical Methods

Provides a broad range of measurement, methodological, and statistical consultative services to C-StARR investigators for proposal development, study design, data analysis, and publication.

Fosters collaborations between C-StARR investigators and consulting methodologists and statisticians.

2. Provide Data Management, Storage, Retrieval, and Quality Control and Assurance Services

Supports C-StARR investigators in the development of databases in collaboration with other research units at Duke.

Assists C-StARR investigators with making data available via NAHDAP. Data modules from the Great Smoky Mountains Study (GSMS) is available

The data archiving process is ongoing as C-StARR investigators complete their work on Center-funded pilot projects and research base projects.

3. Expand Core Services to Meet Emerging Needs of Investigators

Provides essential liaisons among prevention scientists and methodologists and pursues additional sources of support to bring needed statistical and data management resources to C-StARR investigators and other scientists at Duke.

4. Promote Methodological and Statistical Education Training Opportunities

Designs and implements online materials and tutorials for C-StARR investigators, research scientists, and graduate students.

Teaches workshops each academic year, including courses on logistic and probit regression, SEM using Mplus, SAS, Stata, and ArcGIS.

Collaborates with the CCFP and SSRI to facilitate participation in short courses and collaborates with the C-StARR investigators to develop new courses in advanced quantitative methods.
